Xbox One Elite Controller: Why so Expensive?
I have been looking for a capture card for my MacBook Pro since June. After doing all of my research I decided to purchase the Elgato over a Blackmagic capture card. I use it to record my Xbox 360. I only record in 720p for upload purposes. It looks fantastic still. Ex. [...]
The software included is very easy to use. I love the inclusion of Twitch. Downside to the software is the file system. I can't figure out how to keep clips from a particular recording session in one folder. File sizes aren't bad either. 15 minutes is about 1.5 gb.
This is really a fun little box. It easily connects to your game, essentially passes through your computer and sends the signal to the television as it records. In action, it reminds me of a program I use on my Macintosh to 'hijack' audio, though obviously this records video as well.
Works flawlessly with an XBOX 360, which is the only gaming system I have tried it with. What is cool, and what I did not expect, is that it also records off of my cable box. Not something I do often, but I have always wanted to have this since the switch to digital television rendered VCRs and DVD recorders obsolete.
FOr the price I don't think you can beat it.
I purchased the ElgatoGameCaptureHD in November of 2012. I had fairly high expectations of the product and I can say that they were exceeded. The software is a bit heavy on my pre-SB i5 processor when other applications are open but with the recent software update that I received on 12/8/2012 the ElgatoGameCaptureHD now supports live-streaming on twitch.tv and is much less stressful on my processor now. Live-streaming was difficult to do with the previous version of the software having to be open along with x-split and a web browser. The new software updates for Elgato's GameCapture would definitely lead me to rate this product a 10/10 overall. It's lightweight and compact design make it very portable and easy to take with you. The video quality of this device ranges from 360p to 1080p and is crystal clear. The Elgato software also gives you the option to change tint, contrast, brightness, etc. As far as audio encoding goes, I'm not sure what bit-rate is encoded when recording but I can say that it is also a 10/10. Out of the box setup is a breeze and you only need a gaming console and one HDMI cable beforehand (one HDMI cable is provided with the device). I would suggest this to anyone looking to live-stream or record game-play in HQ and at the already competitive price I wouldn't say no.
Video: 10/10
Audio: 10/10
Software: 8/10
User Friendliness: 10/10
CPU Usage (Pre-SB i5): 7/10
Price: 10/10
I highly recommend this product to anyone looking to purchase a quality Xbox or PS3 capture card. Compared to the other capture cards available, the ease of use with the Elgato is unparalleled. The simplistic software is a no brainier.
I mostly liked that it worked just like it said it would and even beyond it too. Thats why its 5 starred. And i would recommend to anyone that wants to record the games they play because it truly is outstanding.
As a PS3 gamer, I was a little hesistant about purchasing a video capture device. Sony has a copyright protection on the PS3's bluray drive, which makes it impossible to capture 1080p video. However, I decided to take a chance and purchased the Elgato Game Capture HD over the Hauppauge HD PVR2. My verdict?
The Elgato Game Capture HD is as close to perfect as it gets.
The setup was very straightforward. There are a few extra steps involved when setting up the device with the PS3, but Elgato supplies a nice step-by-step instruction placard (with pictures!) and is a breeze. Elgato also supplied the AV cable that the PS3 needs to run the device and a USB cable that goes to your computer. There is no power supply to worry with either!
My main concern when I first plugged in the device was how the video quality would be, since the PS3 cable runs through the 'Component/D-Terminal' instead of HDMI. My concerns were unfounded. The video quality is fantastic. I have already uploaded a few videos to my YouTube channel and the video looks the same as it does on my TV screen as I'm playing. Simply perfect.
As far as the actual process of capturing, the device really sucks up a lot of the computer's power. I do not have any other programs running while I'm capturing and everything runs fine. Older computers may have a hard time keeping up with the demand if you have multiple programs running at once, but I have never noticed a slow down in the actual capture. All you need to do is install the Elgato's software to the computer, open the program, hit the big red button, and you're all set! Simple and easy is the name of the game here.
The editing portion of the software is really barebones with only an option to cut your video down to size. For the professional video editor, you may want to supplement your editing experience with some software (Adobe, Sony Vegas, etc). I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio 2011 and it adds just enough flair to make my videos pop. It's not a bad choice if you are on a budget.
If you want to see the Elgato HD in action, you are more than welcome to check out my YouTube channel at [...]. All of the videos uploaded there are captured by the Elgato from my PS3 system.
In conclusion, the Elgato Game Capture HD is the perfect capture device for the console gamer. The ease of use, the price and the quality is top notch. I give it 5 stars, with no hesitation. You will love it!
